Dorothy Dando Somers

Dorothy Dando Somers passed away February 26, 2008 Dorothy Dando Somers a lifelong resident of Ossining passed away Tuesday February 26, 2008. The daughter of Enoch and Rose Downey Dando., she attended Ossining public schools, graduating from Ossining High School in 1925. She attended the College of Mount St. Vincent, graduating with honors in 1929, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in languages. A lifelong communicant of St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church in Ossining, she married Joseph Somers there on August 28, 1933. They were later divorced. Mrs. Somers worked in the accounting Dept. of the Westchester Lighting Co. (now Con Edison) from 1929 until 1933. In 1938 she joined the staff of the Town of Ossining Welfare Dept. as a Social Worker. In 1943 she transferred to the newly created Westchester Co. Dept. of Social Services as a Social Worker in their Family Division. She was promoted to supervisor in 1954 and retired in 1971. Active in local organizations, she was an early member of the Board of the Friends of the Dominican Sisters at Mariandale . An active member of the Ossining Women’s Club, she served on their board from 1981-1984. She also belonged to the Ossining Historical Society. Her family includes her son John of Ossining, two grandsons, John Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, James of Weatherford, OK, James’ wife Julie, their daughter Sarah, a nephew John Dando of Louisville, KY and three nieces, Lois Dando Collins of Louisville, KY, Dorothy Dando Davis of Ormond Beach, FL and Martha Dando Beers of Altamont Springs, FL. Visiting hours will be held at Dorsey funeral home in Ossining on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM with the Funeral Mass on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Augustine’s Church in Ossining.
